Hello. My name is Dalal Alhomaizi. I am 22 years old. My twin sister (Alaa Alhomaizi) and I both study psychology at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, USA. We have created a bilingual campaign called Standing up for Psychological Education and Awareness in Kuwait (S.P.E.A.K). S.P.EA.K aims to eliminate the stigma against mental illness, to promote the seeking of psychological treatment, and to promote psychology as an academic and professional choice. We have a facebook page (www.facebook.com/SPEAKuwait ) and a twitter page (www.twitter.com/SPEAKuwait ), and we will release a website in the near future.
We have an event to raise awareness about mental health and how to end the stigma of mental illness on January 9, 2012 (the rest of the details are coming up towards the end of this email). For a cause to be successful, it obviously needs an audience and the right publicity. This is where we require your assistance. Your blog is very prominent, dear to our heart (we are loyal fans), and followed by many other loyal fans. We would really appreciate it if you would post about our event on your blog please. We need your collaboration to give the voice to the neglected topic of mental health, to promote the rights of every Kuwaiti citizen to be aware of mental health and everything that it offers, and most importantly to end the discrimination against people living with mental illness.
SPEAK (Standing for Psychological Education and Awareness in Kuwait) is a campaign that has been founded by Alaa Alhomaizi and Dalal Alhomaizi. We have been working on this project for two years now and thankfully we received a lot of support from the Kuwaiti community and our university in the US (Northeastern University). The SPEAK campaign seeks to promote equality and support for people with a mental illness or for anyone that chooses to seek psychological help. We also hope to promote psychology as an academic choice and a discipline. Fortunately, Kuwait is a country eager for this change and is ready for it.
We will be holding a SPEAK event at the Women Cultural & Social Society in Khaldiya on Monday January 9th. The event will be presented in the Kuwaiti language and the presentation will be bilingual. We will be discussing the importance of mental health. We will be covering all the basics and some interesting facts about the stigma of mental health. As always, remember “there is no health without mental health”.
Why should you come?
This is not an event just for people with a mental illness. Everyone is welcome. People with mental illnesses, their supporters, and anyone who believes in this cause and ending the stigma is welcome.
