At TEDGlobal 2010 Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa introduced us to THE 99, a comic book and animated series featuring a team of 99 young superheroes inspired by the 99 attributes of Allah. These young characters are the world’s first superheroes based on Islamic culture. Earlier this year at TEDGlobal Al-Mutawa discussed the criticisms he received for his creation, both at home and abroad, and the continuing backlash he faces from those accusing him of “radicalizing” young people.

October 22, 2011, THE 99 had its worldwide online premiere on PBS’ Independent Lens livestream channel, followed by a discussion with Al-Mutawa. Last weekIndependent Lens premiered a documentary called Wham! Bam! Islam! about the making of and motivations behind the controversial series. Filmmaker Isaac Solotaroff followed Al-Mutawa and his collaborators as they struggled to get — and keep — their show on the air. The film can be purchased and downloaded on iTunes.

Through Wham! Bam! Islam! and continued exposure Al-Mutawa hopes that THE 99 will be able to fulfill its original goal of promoting the positive aspects of his religion to children of all origins and all faiths.

“The Martyrdom of St. Agatha” is one of the most touching religious works ever created by the artist. The theme of the martyrdom of the Saint, whose breast has been cut off by the executioner, had already been treated by the artist in an altarpiece in the Santo in Padua.

Here he takes it up again, but with a much more intense dramatic feeling, with a stricken expression in the emaciated face of the Saint, white as death, which will not again be found except perhaps in certain passages of the Este altarpiece.

The Anatomy of a Cupcake by Allen Hemberger and Sarah Wilson.

Info: Fur Traders Descending the Missouri, is one of Bingham’s famous art paintings of the traders and hunters who travelled the Mississippi River and its branches.

Artist: George Caleb Bingham.

Year: 1845

Loved the pieces of ART we came across at London Opera Gallery.

Marvelous stuff.

The three wise monkeys are a pictorial maxim. Together they embody the proverbial principle to “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”. The three monkeys are Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil. Sometimes there is a fourth monkey depicted with the three others; the last one, Shizaru, symbolizes the principle of “do no evil”. He may be shown crossing his arms.

Went to buy some stuff from Nespresso, 360 mall (will make a full post about it – dont freak out).

Before I even stepped into the store, I felt the giant artistic work of Mr.Manish Arora (indian) hovering above me with the brightest colors imaginable. There were Big, medium and small artworks displayed all over the store.

I wish you guys would pass by and give it a try cuz I think my pictures didnt do’em justice at all.

Ofcourse I asked the kind and multi-tasking BEE Mr.Mahmoud, who works there, if I could BUY any of these pieces, specially the small one, he said I cant and its for display only. GOSh I wanted to steal one, it looked that good.

Mahmoud did explain, however, that the artwork represents the small coffee shots we buy. You know, the yellow, gold, blue, green etc. He says the artist wanted to represent them as Princesses of the countries or blends they came from. A bit of disney’s fantasia wouldn’t hurt right ? cuz I was touched, big time.
