Meet Mohammad Al Matar

Mohammad AlMatar is an Oiffcer in the Armed Forces of Kuwait, an active member of Qadsiya Sports Club and a running coach to several bi-weekly basis, teaching a rising generation of future runners and sports enthusiasts the basics of proper running form.. Mohammad is no stranger to international competition, having participated earlier this year in Dubai’s 10K Run, as well as Ras Al Khaimah’s international Half Marathon. He took part in and completed the first-of-its-kind Run Kuwait event, covering a total distance of around 240KM from Kuwait’s Northern border to its Southern border.

This year Mohammad took part in the Marathon des Sables desert footrace which is in its 27th year. The Marathon des Sables is one of the toughest and oldest ultra marathons of 250k The course for the event varies each year, but the distance covered is generally about 153 miles (245 Km) which is run or walked over 6 stages of roughly 33, 34, 38, 82, 42, 15 kms. Some people take 7 days to finish it. This is a self-supportive race with competitors carrying everything they will need for the duration on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc). Everything apart from a tent which will be ready and waiting each evening – and water. Water is distributed every 10 km to 15km. Temperatures can go up to 48c during the day and 3c during night time along side heavy sand storms and rain at sometimes.

Out of 850+ international competitiors, Mohammad finished the entire race in a respectible time of 29H20M earning him a fantastic 46th position overall. There have been previous attempts by Gulf athletes but none have scored anywhere close to a top 50 position. Kuwait should be very proud of Mohammad as he has really set the standard for any Gulf athlete who wish to participate in one of the toughest footraces the planet has to offer.
