Review: Mercedes Benz 450 GL Grand Edition
The kind lads over at Mercedes Benz (Albisher & Alkazemi) ringed “yours truly” to give this car a go over the weekend.
Im no car expert like my big brother, however, I must say im an auto-mobile lover/admirer like many of ya’ll out there.
Had a blast going nearly everywhere I usually go with it, really wanted to hit Bnaider/Wafra/Abdiliy however the weather was really dusty last weekend. Still, a blessing.
I want you to go through the details I have below, if anything is missing or lacks bread and butter, i’ll be more than happy to fix/assist/bring forth and DO THE DO for you, HAH!

Engine
So what do we have here ?
A V8 petrol engine 4.6 liters with an output of 340 hp & maximum torque of 460 Nm. Benz boys claim the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and has a top speed of 235 km/h. well I didn’t do that kind of mess, I just drove it like normal human beings without the vroom vroom effect.
So how was it ? A SMOOTH RIDE.
Why would I say that, why smooth ? cuz its BIG, not just big, its ELEPHANT BIG, still rides beautifully with no trouble at all. never knew it would feel like that.
Still, you can go for a bigger/more faster engine on the GL 550 if you like.
Design
I think the car is designed for a mum – dad – Chauffeur or social freak with loads of friends. This is a 7 seater SUV after all.
It has lots of sophistication inside, however, they went for a blunt square look outside. Maybe its miss Mercedes Benz’s way of saying “I like my men plain & rough”
Why would I assume that ? Well I had to compare, cuz this baby goes head to head with the stylish Audi Q7 and the notorious BMW x5.
The design shifts from masculine plain to a zexy monster at night. Look at the pics, the interior & exterior light designers did a great job mixing functionality with modern touches. NICE !
Functionality
Call me silly if you like, but I have a brain disease, the first thing I look at whenever I check any car are cup holders. ALL cars I drove lacked cup holders, however, this baby had plenty, GRRR !!
Then ofcourse you have the usual suspects, full blown seat settings, side mirror fix, big beautiful lock/unlock button, placed perfectly I must say.
The phone settings via bluetooth is a breeze, add to that the huge screen in the middle with the beautiful dial pad, works nicely together.
Parking with front + back sensors + video screen with semi-diagram lines on it, guarantees you always leave your car aligned where it should be everytime, perfectly.
Automatic one button UP // One button DOWN trunk functions the way it should. Plus, whenever you want to get rid of the extra 3 seats at the back for more space, just use the buttons you see up there.
Space
I think the pic tells you everything you need to know. Full fledge 7 seater.
Entertainment
The car comes loaded with the following:
World renowned Harman Kardon sound system.
2 TV screens tied with a DVD entertainment program for the passengers at the back.
Extra plug to run your ipod/iPhone and ipod touch devices.
The steering wheel is where all the magic happens, you get full control to skip tracks, answer calls, check milage, switch gears and nearly do everything you want from one place.
Random fact, miss Rochelle Jordan’s “Take Time” took all our time while we were playing around the car.
Bonus
Since I drive a coupe, I tend to have a bit of problems on speed bumps, ATM machines and YES, coffee joints. Pics above SCREAM how happy and easy the job was. HAH!
Wish List:
- Would appreciate it if the Compartment in the middle had a fridge like other SUVs.
– Vacuum doors please.
– Great engine, a notch higher like the twin turbo BMW x6 would have made it a screamer.

I don’t think that this car is aimed to compete with the X5 or cayenne. its more of a Full size SUV. I think Mercedes should really change the design of its ML class to be less boring mom to a more sporty soccer mom SUV. maybe MB will listen ;P

Looks like a great car, Anything about 4×4 ability? at least to ensure we don’t get stuck in those situations where you need one, or a way to help out other ppl.
I love the space. A thing i’m missing in my Fj cruiser. Again Design is as good as it gets, simple yet elegant. Cool headroom, especially with the heat in Kuwait. I might just as well pay them a visit to take a closer look.
