Abdullah Interviews Meqdad Al-Kout

Funny how time flies so quickly, how we tend to forget people we used to know because of the crazy loaded life style we lead and with things to do from here and there. Today’s guest is a friend, a dear friend from college days, before I evolved into a dinosaur, when I was just a little lizard. HAH!

Honestly, Meqdad was one of the funniest most kindest students I met with the biggest heart imaginable, always minding his business with a smile that never leaves his face, he was the college’s sweetheart, in my book. I cant forget how he used to laugh at my nasty remarks or how we, the boys, retaliate against the smart honeys, if any. I saw him once immitating someone and could not believe how he would transform from this shy student to a freaky- i know all about you – mogul. I loved what I saw and im not sharing the nasty scenes.

Today, Meqdad has lots of movie productions under his sleeves. Now, as we speak his latest mini movie is being shown in Dubai titled “Mustache”. The short film is his portal of expression on social matters that occur in the country, ofcourse done around an amazingly creative idea.

He was kind enough to share some behind the scene footage with us, still we dont want to ruin it for those who will see it when it hits Kuwait, so we are revealing just small bits.

Lemme introduce him to you, get to know the guy a bit better through this quick Q&A interview and know a little more info about the movie.

Mon ami, speak !
Meqdad Al-Kout, 26, I love cinema and filmmaking, but I am also a huge fan of football and video games. I have a BA in English Literature. I currently have a job as a translator.

Alright, take me back to your childhood.
Being bullied most of the time, but had some good laughs with imaginary people.

What inspired you to tap into who you are now ?
I guess when I started experiencing certain aspects of my personal life and then interacting with society and whatnot, I developed a passion for wanting to portray some of those aspects in film. I have always loved to hold the camera and just shoot.

What can you share with us about your latest movie, Mustache ?
Mustache is basically a 15 minutes short film, and it depicts the life of a Kuwaiti man who cannot grow a mustache in older Kuwait, which society emphasized on a lot.

There is no actual moral message in the film, but the viewer will see the incredible pressure society puts on one “different” member, especially when this person is completely helpless about his problem.

What differs you from the rest of the competition out there?
I don’t really think I differ from the rest of the filmmakers out there, because each one of them has a certain vision to approach and portray, and each one is unique all by himself.

Your support system.
I have always had the opposite of support from my family, but my friends were always extremely supportive of me and my work.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now ?
Getting interviewed by p0ach again? Well I honestly can’t literally see myself in 5 years because otherwise I’d be hallucinating. But I would try my best to improve, mature, and reach more people and festivals by that time.

Throw something for p0ach readers.
I frankly don’t want to advise people on what to do, but all I can tell your readers is that you can always use your experiences in life to try to influence change.

i heard of him when i was in college especially in the english day, allah ewafga inshala.

  2. Amazing man and a great interview, he has the same childhood as mine looooooooool. Thanks P0ach :)

  3. Swair says:

I was with you guys at Uni!

I remember him from those days and, mashallah mashallah, I’ve never heard anything bad about him.. That’s how nice and lovable he is, from both students and professors.

Of course, on stage, he was a totally different man and could make you laugh even if you weren’t in the mood, an instant cheer-up.. I remember once for the English Day, he was part of a play called “The Fly” (if I remember correctly) and when it was time to give away awards, he didn’t get one of the bigger ones and there was a LOT of booing, we felt like he was robbed lol

Ma agool ila Allah ewafgah, he deserves nothing but the best :D

P.S. Sorry for the long comment!

  5. Dalal says:

ya i wish him all the luck , i remember him from college , we were in one of the classes . my brother says good stuff about him .

  6. Jacqui says:

One of the greatest new directors coming onto the scene in Kuwait, I am glad to see part of his beginning experiences when we saw him in an English Day play as Swair put it called “The Fly” or something of the sort, it was insane, comedic, and had lots of hidden messages.

He certainly deserves all the best.

My message to Meqdad is “The sky is the limit” don’t ever forget that and best of luck in everything :D

  7. Kuwait Snob says:

I met Meqdad some time ago after he finished his movie ‘Banana’. I found him incredibly deep and incredibly expressive – neither of which quality shows through in this ‘interview’ with him. He has challenged himself and challenged society during his short career through the clever use of humor. I hope it is a career that will push him forward to greatness.

  8. Seema* says:

I soooo want to see that movie.
    great poster btw!
    :)

  9. Dalal says:

    alla ywafga enshallah =)

  10. Teddy B. says:

Super movie! I enjoy the way he captures his scenes and I always love to analyse the objects he places in the backgrounds and try to interpret their significance. Especially his use of colour.

Banana and Paradoxes rocked too. Goodluck Meqdad looks like I’m not your only big fan!

  11. اتمنى لك التوفيق في اعمالك
