Quick Review: Buddha

This is a very very quick review of my Buddha book review, side study and workshop.

First of all, what period are we talking about ?
563 BCE to 483 BCE

What was he exactly ?
A son of a king in India. He was a prince. Living a luxurious life. Lived in a royal palace, actually more than 4 palaces in remote locations in india to enjoy the different season changes. He was born in a very secluded atmosphere. Everything he witnessed was behind closed doors, the kingdom gates. His father was very protective of him, so he wouldn’t let him leave the castle.

Also, his father wanted for his son to be a really really great king, so he thought he should not let him be exposed to religion or humans that suffer, basically, he didnt want him to see the sick, poor, unfortunate or unhealthy, just because he probably thought this would make him strong or stronger than him.

Growth ?
Buddha got married, had a son, was prince of the lands. He felt that whats surrounding him now, materialism, is not what filled his heart up. Not even close.
He thought of traveling, going to meet scholars who have wisdom, on the way out, despite of all his father’s energy to move away all the people who are old, sick, unfortunate, he, buddha, saw them on the way out, he was shocked by the first sight of a very visible elderly man. He asked why does he look like that ? They told him this is what growth does to you, you get old. Then saw the diseased, severely, asked and got answers. Saw everything his father was trying to hide from him.

He was shocked and overwhelmed with what he saw. He escaped the luxurious life, he went to find peace in the jungle, in nature, away from all the lies and masks he was surrounded with his whole life.

Enlightenment and Teachings ?
He went on to meditate in nature, practiced the power of breathing, inhaling, exhaling, the breathing meditation. He eventually discovered what buddhist now call the “Middle Way” which is “a path of moderation away from the extremes of self-indulgence and self-mortification” through knowledge, moving away from ignorance, seeking truth, unpersonalize misfortunate events.

It is said that he was touched by some divine powers that taught him these major teachings:

1. No killing

2. No stealing

3. No sexual misconduct

4. No lying

5. No intoxicants (drinks, alcohol, etc)

Abdullah’s take on this:
Please realize that he was present in the time where another (well known religion) was dividing people into different categories based on a warrior’s statue:

People who belonged to the head of the warrior who are priests (High)
People who belonged to the sword of a the warrior who are war heroes/warriors too which equals Nobles of the society (MED)
People who belonged to the clothing of the warrior represent servants (low).
People who belonged to the FEET of the warrior who represent the lowest of low.

Buddha came to break all this cycle of insane ignorant discrimination and freedom of labels, titles that literally meant nothing to humans.

The QURAN tells us that there are messengers we told you of, there are those who we didnt. I think he might be one of those who were not mentioned in the Quran for some wise reason only GOD knows of.

Now tell me, are not these teachings close to those who are dear messengers of us ? Didnt every nation have a messenger of its own ? Didnt we know that there are 1,000 plus messengers out there ? cant this prince, who left the luxury, sex, materialism, praise and glory be one of them ? I myself am not sure but there is a big chance for him and i say this with this thought in my mind (ONLY GOD KNOWS THE TRUTH).

You know, Arabs used to say, before the wonderful un matched Mohammed (peace be upon him) came, they used to say ALLAT WA AL IZA, when they wanted to swear on something dear to them.

DO you know WHO ALLAT WAL IZZA were ? they were ordinary people just like me and you. They were really good people, who represent peace and respect in the land of arabia. It is said, that the devil, slowly creeped the idea of shame into arabs, telling them ” these are greats of your country ! You have nothing to remind you of them ? Not even a statue ?? ” There, right there the story of arab statues around Mecca appeared.

Make no mistake, arabs did believe in GOD, yet, they used to use ALLAT WA ALIZA as the portal to GOD. Same thing was with BUDDHA, BUDDHISTS.

See the similarities ?

I, Abdullah, am nothing but a slave for GOD, nothing more, yet there is nothing wrong with enlightenment. Knowing more, celebrating my religion, my religion that tells me that IT represents the totality of all religions, IT tells me that If I do not believe in GOD, his angels, ALL messengers, heaven and hell, holy books, Quran, Bible, Torah, Also, Fate, if I do not believe in one of those things, I am not a believer.

I might say something now that will shake you up, yet, I am not a muslim just because I was born in a muslim family. I challenged my brain, I searched, I looked, I studied, STILL AM, till I saw the light, that most dont see (unfortunately), ISLAM, is not a wrong or right mess, its a path, its giving, its unity, its LOVE. Only then, have I became a very proud muslim. I dont need no exterior action to show it. You know what im talking about.

This is my take on buddha, this is what I think.

Hope your enlightened too. Oh and by the way ? Buddha means “The Enlightened One”.

p.s: I celebrate all religions, I hold no judgement towards anything or anyone. Everybody need their own space, their own freedom. I respect the diversity the world holds within it. I am fortunate to have friends with literally all religions of the world, including atheists. To all his peace, this peace however is mine. Its a blessing to have it.

  6. Ur very inspiring. I think the fact that you stated your views with confidence but without arrogance, with honesty but without “sugar coating”, is so eloquent-specially with such a sensitive subject. U said things in plain vanilla and they stood out.
In addition to what you mentioned- I guess some individuals fear that enlightenment means betrayal to themselves and their beliefs. The way I see it, enlightenment would only mean betrayal if i am not myself confident of my beliefs. Otherwise, enlightenment only reinforces what I already believe in because it gives 1 very important thing: PERSPECTIVE.
maybe i didnt express myself very clearly bas i know u’ll get what i mean ;)

    • H, I am super glad you find this piece inspiring/enlightening. Thank you for observing the good in it.

Your words are absolutely loud and clear with one word, the TRUTH.

I like how you have summed up the many confused individuals in that one line.

      Your presence is a blessing.

  7. I think there is nothing wrong in enlightening one’s self about other religions or anything for that matter.. ilislam 3umra ma mina3 il3ilm as long as you have the right intentions and understanding. i think buddha’s life is pretty interesting, his modesty did lead him to the right direction, but unfortunately i dont think he believed in God. and therefore i cannot agree with you that he’s a messenger. Maybe he was just a wise man who tried to understand the universe, but unfortunately never read the quraan ;)

    • Most sources view him as a non believer. He was.

Please realize that we are talking about 1000+ years of unidentified sources putting things together that are non sense.

As I said, there is great “unknown to man” wisdom why the Quran didnt mention all messengers.

  10. actually no, you’re not quite there yet(the buddha wasn’t a believer).
although i really like your take on the book and see you haven’t misinterpreted the basic principles of buddhism.
however, you need to understand that he didn’t need to seek enlightenment if he was a believer.
his teachings are actually the polar opposite of islamic teachings and the main reason for this is he does not acknowledge the existence of god.
    further, buddhism isn’t a religion.
it does not dictate or preach or command people to worship.
it simply educates people on how to be the best they can be and refrain from the obvious evils and ignorant customs.
i hope this clears any misconceptions-im buddhist ;)
